Orangeries

Orangeries have been referred to as different things over the years. In the past, an Orangery was a place for the cultivation of oranges. Buildings were in place for this cultivation and gardens surrounded the buildings. Orange trees were placed in the surrounding gardens and referred to as Orangeries. Overtime, however, the actual building took on the name.

The traditional Orangery was a separate building from the main house and made of stone built parapet walls containing large vertical sliding sash windows. The roof consisted of timber rafters covered with glass. The roof also had a box gutter (usually made of cast Iron). These Orangeries were common in renaissance and baroque gardens.

Today, Orangeries are defined a bit differently. They now refer to a largely glazed building with a glass roof. They are often attached to the main house and many are built from timber instead of stone. Today’s Orangeries can be thought of as a room extension with the added perk of having a glass roof.

Orangeries are primarily made of timber and stone. Many people enjoy these materials because they replicate the traditional Orangery the best. You can, however, find some suppliers using Vinyl (PVC) and Aluminum. The cost of an Orangery varies greatly depending on whether stone or timber is used. PVC and Aluminum are definitely cheaper alternatives.
